How to Choose a Travel Tote: Zipper, Capacity and Carry-On Practicality
The best travel tote is not simply the biggest bag you can find. It is the one that gives you enough usable space for the journey, keeps important items reasonably secure and still feels manageable when you are moving through an airport, station or hotel.
If you are choosing between travel bags, start with four questions: Does it close securely? Is the opening easy to use? Will it hold the items you actually carry? And can you carry it comfortably when it is full?
1. Start with the closure
An open tote can be convenient for quick access, but a zipper is often the more practical choice when the bag will sit under a seat, move through security trays or travel through crowded spaces. A zipped design can also help prevent small items from escaping when the bag tips over.
For a travel-focused example, see the high-capacity vegan leather zipper tote.

2. Think about usable capacity, not just outside dimensions
Two bags with similar outside measurements can feel very different inside. Shape, opening width, lining and structure all affect what you can realistically pack. Before buying, make a short list of the largest items you expect to carry: perhaps a tablet or laptop, water bottle, travel documents, headphones, a light layer and a small pouch.
If a laptop is part of your travel kit, our 13-inch laptop bag guide explains why the opening and usable interior matter as much as headline dimensions.
3. Match the tote shape to the trip
For flights and train journeys
A roomy tote with a secure closure and straightforward opening is usually easier to live with than a highly structured bag with a narrow top. You want to be able to reach documents and essentials without unpacking everything.
For a beach or resort trip
Texture and lighter woven constructions may make more sense once you reach the destination. If that is the main use case, browse the straw bag collection or read our straw and raffia care guide before packing one in luggage.
For work plus travel
Choose a silhouette that does not feel out of place when you arrive at a meeting or dinner. Our hobo vs tote work-bag guide can help if your travel bag also needs to function as a work bag.
4. Check the opening before the volume
A generous interior is less useful if the opening makes the largest item difficult to insert. This is especially important for laptops, document folders and packing pouches. Measure the item itself and compare it with the bag's listed measurements rather than assuming that a label such as “large tote” guarantees a fit.
5. Do not forget the weight of what goes inside
Travel totes are easy to overpack. Even a comfortable bag can become tiring once it contains electronics, a bottle and other dense items. Packing fewer, more useful items often improves the experience more than choosing a dramatically larger bag.
Travel tote checklist
- A closure that suits your comfort level
- An opening wide enough for your largest item
- Enough usable interior space for your real packing list
- A shape that works at the destination as well as in transit
- A size that does not encourage unnecessary overpacking
- Dimensions checked against any airline-specific personal-item rules before departure
FAQ
Is a zipper necessary on a travel tote?
No, but it can be useful when you want a more secure top for crowded transit, security trays or under-seat storage.
Can a tote be used as a personal item on a flight?
Potentially, but airline limits vary. Always compare the bag's current dimensions with the allowance published by the airline for your specific fare and route.
Should a travel tote also fit a laptop?
Only if you normally travel with one. If you do, check the device dimensions, bag opening and usable interior rather than relying only on the advertised bag size.
